About Our Motion Imaging Machine

Precision Spine & Motion Imaging has the region’s only “real time” x-ray to view spinal motion like a movie — known as Vertebral Motion Analysis (VMA®). Vertebral Motion Analysis, or VMA®, is an FDA-cleared system for assessing lumbar and cervical spinal motion. It is an updated method of assessing spinal motion compared to the standard flexion/extension bending x-rays that are currently used to assess spinal motion, including instability.

If you were trying to capture a special moment, would you prefer a single picture or a movie? Until recently, doctors relied on outdated flexion and extension x-rays to determine whether spinal surgery was necessary. These images are single snapshots taken at one moment in time.

Patients are often asked to bend past their pain, which leads many to compensate by moving their hips instead of their spine. This makes it difficult for traditional x-rays to capture true spinal instability. As a result, important motion problems can be missed.

Our unique VMA® imaging captures an x-ray movie rather than a single picture. The x-ray machine gently guides the patient through forward and backward bending. This provides a clearer, real-time view of spinal motion.

Advanced software analyzes spinal motion to identify instability, which is interpreted by a board-certified diagnostic radiologist and shared with the surgeon to support accurate surgical decisions. The technology is more sensitive and reproducible than traditional methods for determining instability that may require fusion. It also delivers a lower radiation dose than the standard six-view X-ray series, making VMA® the future of functional spine imaging.

Precision Spine & Motion Imaging is proud to be among the first in the country to offer Spine Motion Imaging. The VMA® is an advanced diagnostic tool that captures hundreds of low-dose, x-ray–type images as you move gently, creating a video of your spine in motion. This detailed data may help surgeons more accurately identify the source of spinal issues and guide treatment decisions.

The VMA® is a test that offers doctors motion imaging technology that may pinpoint the source of your issues. The VMA®, unlike a common x-ray, takes hundreds of x-ray type pictures of your spine while you move to create a video. The VMA® provides more accurate motion measurements to help diagnose your unique condition. The VMA® motion imaging technology is a game-changer! Your spine deserves the latest in imaging technology.
